What skills does the GRE General Test measure?

The GRE General Test measures your verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, critical thinking and analytical writing skills — skills that have been developed over a long period of time and are not related to a specific field of study but are important for all.

How is the GRE General Test administered?

The GRE General Test is a computer-delivered test offered year-round at home and at test centers around the world.

How long is the GRE General Test?

The total testing time for the GRE General Test is around three hours and 45 minutes, plus short breaks. Get more details on the timing and tasks for each section.

What level of math content is included in the test?

The GRE General Test uses the foundations of high school math to test quantitative reasoning. The test material measures your ability to understand basic concepts of arithmetic, algebra, geometry and data analysis; to reason quantitatively; and to solve problems in a quantitative setting.

How does the Analytical Writing section differ from the Writing section of the TOEFL iBT® Test?

The TOEFL iBT Writing section and GRE Analytical Writing measures are intended to measure different sets of skills. The TOEFL iBT Writing section contains two writing tasks: an independent task asks test takers to support an opinion in writing, and an integrated task that asks test takers to write responses that integrate and organize information from a reading passage and a lecture. These writing tasks are not designed to measure higher levels of critical thinking and analytical writing, but center instead on candidates' composition skills and command of English vocabulary, grammar, spelling, and syntax with some analysis and synthesis of material. Therefore, scores on the two tests are not comparable.

Because the TOEFL® test emphasizes fundamental writing and comprehension skills, the TOEFL score can supplement an Analytical Writing score by helping faculty determine whether a low score on the GRE Analytical Writing measure is due to lack of familiarity with English or lack of ability to produce and analyze logical arguments.

Can I take the GRE General Test at home?

The at home testing option is available to anyone who meets the following requirements:

1.The option is offered in your country or location. It is available everywhere that the GRE General Test is normally available, except Mainland China and Iran.

The ability to register for the GRE General Test at home option is dependent on the country name you enter in your ETS account, not your physical address or IP address. If the test at home option is available in the country you enter, you will see the "test at home" option as you begin your registration. For example, if you select Mainland China, Iran, etc., as your country in your ETS account, you will not see the at home testing option.

2.Your computer meets the equipment requirements.

3.You have a room that provides an acceptable environment for the test.

What days and times are available for at home testing?

Test times are available around the clock, seven days a week. Appointments may be available as early as 24 hours after you register.

What if I need to change the date or location of my test?

See Reschedule or Cancel Your GRE General Test Registration.

Can I reschedule my test from a test center to an at home test, or vice versa?

Yes, you can do this in your ETS account.

What if I require testing accommodations?

ETS is committed to serving test takers with disabilities and health-related needs by providing services and reasonable accommodations that are appropriate given the purpose of the test. Testing accommodations are available for test takers who meet ETS requirements. See Accommodations for Test Takers with Disabilities or Health-related Needs.

What if I require accommodations for the at home test?

You can request accommodations via your ETS account before registering for an at home test. If you are approved for extended time, extra breaks, screen magnification and selectable colors, you can register online. For all other approved accommodations, you must register directly with ETS Disability Services.

How often can I retake the test?

You can take the test once every 21 days, up to five times within any continuous rolling 12-month period (365 days). This applies even if you canceled your scores on a test taken previously.

  inserting text

  deleting text

  cutting and pasting

  undoing the previous action

Tools such as spell-checkers and grammar-checkers are not available in the ETS software. You can practice writing essays using the word processor component of the POWERPREP® Practice Tests.

Gather the materials you'll need for your test session.

  Passport or other acceptable ID

Acceptable note- taking materials, such as a whiteboard or plastic transparency sheet

Cellphone or handheld mirror for check in

How do I launch my at home test?

You can find the URL to launch your test in your confirmation email that you received after you registered for the test, or in the reminder email that was sent to you 48 hours before your test appointment.

Will I be monitored during my at home test session?

Yes. A human proctor will connect with you during the check-in process, verify your ID and monitor you throughout the entire session to ensure you are following testing procedures. The proctor assigned to monitor you could be male or female.

You will also be monitored by artificial intelligence (AI) technology to help ensure test security.

What if I need to contact or chat with the proctor during my at home test?

Speak to get their attention or use the LogMeIn chat function. It may take 30–60 seconds for the proctor to reply.

If the proctor is attempting to chat with you, the chat icon (a blue owl) will bounce up and down.

Will I have to submit a photo for my at home test?

Your photo will be taken at the beginning of your test and included as part of your score record to the institutions you designated to receive your scores.

Will I be recorded during my at home test?

Yes, your entire test session will be recorded.

Can I use a calculator on the test?

The GRE General Test includes an on-screen calculator for use in the Quantitative Reasoning section to reduce the emphasis on computation and to focus more attention on reasoning skills. The calculator has four functions (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) and a square root.

For multiple-answer questions, if I get any of the answers correct, do I receive partial credit?

For the questions with multiple answers, all of the selections made must be correct in order to receive credit for answering the question correctly.

What if I observe irregular behavior at the testing site?

Please contact ETS as soon as possible to report any irregular behavior that is either observed or reported to you — for example, someone copying from another test taker, taking a test for someone else, having access to test questions or answers before the test or using notes or unauthorized aids. All information is held in strictest confidence.

Troubleshooting At Home Testing Technical Issues

What if I fail the ProctorU® Equipment Check?

You must resolve all issues (shown in red) and pass the equipment check prior to checking in for your test. If you cannot resolve the issues yourself, contact ProctorU using the contact form at the bottom of the equipment check page. Live Help Desk Technicians are available to assist you.

You must resolve all issues before your test appointment, or you will not be able to test.

Is there anything I can do ahead of time to prevent issues?

Run the ProctorU Equipment Check at the time of day you plan to test to make sure you do not have any bandwidth issues.

Run a final equipment check shortly before your test session starts.

Close all browsers and applications not needed for the test. This can help prevent bandwidth issues while you test.

Make sure any other devices in your household that use internet are not running.

What if I have an issue right before my test starts?

If you have technical issues immediately before your test, contact ProctorU:

  Live Chat:Live Chat

  Email:support@proctoru.com

  Phone:1-855-772-8678

What if I have a technical issue and my start time is extended?

This will not affect the amount of time you have to complete the test. The timer for your test does not begin until the proctor enters the password.

What if I have a technical issue during my test?

If you have a technical issue during your test that prohibits you from speaking to the proctor, notify the proctor via the LogMeIn chat function. The chat icon (a blue owl) can be found on the task bar for a PC and on the menu bar for Mac®.

What if I lose internet during the test?

If you lose your internet connection momentarily, you'll automatically be reconnected to the proctor when your connection is restored. If your exam can be reopened, your proctor will do so for you.

If you are not able to reconnect and speak to the proctor via the LogMeIn chat function, call ProctorU at 1-855-772-8678 for assistance.

  Scoring and Reporting

  评分和报告

Will I see my scores at the end of my test when I take the GRE General Test?

After completing the GRE General Test, you will be given the opportunity to report or cancel your scores. If you choose Report Scores, you will see your unofficial Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning scores. Because of the Analytical Writing essay scoring process, you will not be able to view your Analytical Writing score.

  What scores are reported?

Three scores are reported on the GRE General Test:

A Verbal Reasoning score is reported on a 130–170 score scale, in 1-point increments.

A Quantitative Reasoning score is reported on a 130–170 score scale, in 1-point increments.

An Analytical Writing score is reported on a 0–6 score level, in half-point increments.

How do I send my scores to an institution?

After you have completed the test and viewed your scores, you can choose up to four score recipients on test day as part of your test fee. Your official scores will be sent to them 10–15 days after your test date.

You can also send score reports to institutions after test day for a fee.

When do I get my scores? When are they sent to my score recipients?

Your official scores will be available in your ETS account and sent to the institutions you designated approximately 10–15 days after your test date.

Will my score report indicate if I took the test at home?

  No.

How will I get my scores?

Once your official scores are reported, you will receive an email from ETS indicating you can view your scores online through your ETS account.

How can I get an official Test-taker Score Report?

If you wish to have a paper copy of your official Test-taker Score Report, you may use the print functionality in your ETS account to print a copy of your official score report.

How long are GRE scores valid?

Scores are reportable for five years following your test date. For example, scores for a test taken on July 3, 2021, are reportable through July 2, 2026.

GRE scores earned prior to July 2016 are no longer reportable.

Note: It takes approximately five business days to process requests to send GRE scores. If you plan to send scores and the date at which your scores are no longer reportable is approaching, allow enough time for processing or your scores may not be sent.

How do I order additional score reports?

You can send additional score reports online, by mail or by fax.
