    Academics 学术

    There's a lot of rote learning here. We have too many pre-meds, engineering students, and international students who come from toxic education systems and this makes the academic environment here very difficult for someone who is learning for the sake of learning. Very rarely do I walk through the commons or servery and hear conversations that are about anything other than the petty happenings around campus.

    The vast majority of my professors have been excellent and top of their fields. I have had some good professors and enjoyed their classes but at times the workload is hard and takes over every minute of the day. Its particularly difficult to revise for exams when you have lots of homework to do. Its often difficult to get into popular classes but you just have to keep trying. There are rooms for private studying in College and the library.

    Campus 校园

    Rice is next to the historic district, museum district, and metro line. There is also a lot of interesting restaurants and (slightly expensive) shops in the Rice village (which is kinda in walking distance from campus).

    As a pre-med nerd, I get excited seeing the vast greatness of the Texas Medical Center and the museums of Houston from my residential college. Rice students tend to stay on campus though. Everything I need like food, friends, work and fun are all on campus, so I don't feel the urge to explore the local area very often.

    With the world's largest medical center, a thriving museum district, a gorgeous shopping mall, an enormous park complete with a theatre, zoo, science center and golf course AND the metro rail all literally bordering campus, Rice's location can't be beat. The Texas Med Center conducts amazing research and has killer internship opportunities, there are over 20 museums/galleries within walking distance of campus, Rice Village has a great selection of stores and restaurants, Hermann Park is stunningly beautiful with loads of attractions and Rice pays for public transportation around Houston. It is an absolutely ideal environment for a college campus, I cannot imagine a better one.
